Welcome to the Institute of Numerical Mathematics (NuMa)
Numerical mathematics is a modern field of mathematics devoted to the design, analysis and implementation of algorithms for the solution of complex problems in science and engineering. We represent this area in research and teaching, providing the theoretical foundations that are used in many other areas of science.
We cover several topics in the field of numerical mathematics including
- numerical solution of partial differential equations, in particular by mixed finite elements and isogeometric analysis;
- structure preserving discretization of nonlinear dynamical systems and partial differential equations;
- efficient solvers for linear systems via multigrid preconditioning and domain decomposition methods;
- nonlinear optimization, like non-smooth problems and set-valued analysis.
The Institute of Numerical Mathematics is part of the Department of Mathematics at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz.
